Chunky Ribbed Infinity Scarf

The Chunky Ribbed Infinity Scarf is great practice for your Half Double Crochet stitch, but working in the back loops only (BLO) gives it a more interesting surface and adds visual depth.

CHUNKY RIBBED INFINITY SCARF

Hook: P (11.50mm)
Yarn: Super Bulky (I used 3 skeins of Lion Brand’s “Hometown USA”)
Difficulty: Easy
Gauge: Not crucial, but a row of 8 HDC = about 5″
Finished Size: Approximately 52″ around, 8″ wide

Notes:
(1) This pattern is worked in American Standard Terms.
(2) This pattern is a great candidate for the Chainless Foundation method, if you’re comfortable with it. If you haven’t learned it, there is a helpful tutorial here.

THE PATTERN

To begin: Ch 83.

Round 1: HDC in 2nd chain from hook. HDC across. Bring ends together, being careful not to twist the chain. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the first HDC.
(You can also do a chainless foundation stitch (FHDC) for the first row of 82 HDC. If you don’t know how to do this, check out this tutorial. It will change your life. Be sure to join the FHDC, and don’t twist it in the meantime.)

Round 2: Ch1, turn. In BLO (Back Loops Only), HDC around. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the first HDC.

Rounds 3-10 (or until scarf is about 8″ wide): Ch1, turn. In BLO, HDC around. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the first HDC.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Hi Nancy, if you’re referring to the one that probably popped up on your screen when you first visited my site, it’s the Shiplap Slouch and you can sign up for it in the form on my sidebar. (Where it says “free gift”) 🙂

When my stepdaughter said she wanted an infinity scarf, I asked her to choose from yours because I know you have some of the best patterns – easy to follow and well-written. This is the the one she chose and it turned out very nicely in black. Thank you so much for your amazing designs, and also for offering them for free. 🙂

I could not find the yarn you said to use, so I purchased Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick. Will the finished scarf come out the same with this yarn?

Love this pattern (thank you!) but I’m wanting to make sure I’m understanding something before I start it. You say to use Super Bulky yarn, but then said you used Hometown…which is not super bulky, but worsted weight. When you say you used three skeins of it, do you mean you crocheted with three strands at once? The sample LOOKS very bulky, so I’m thinking that’s what you mean…but I want to make sure. Thanks!

Hometown USA is Super Bulky (see http://www.lionbrand.com/yarns/hometownUSA.html). I used 3 skeins total, one at a time. 🙂

Oh gosh! Definitely a “blond” moment on my part. I’m thinking Homeland, instead of Hometown. I actually have BOTH of those types of yarns, but the Hometown ones are new additions to my stash and the name just didn’t click. Thanks so much for your quick response. I’ll engage brain before fingers next time! 🙂

This was my first scarf I made! I love it and it’s one of my go to patterns! I have so many of your patterns saved and on my to do list! I love how the instructions are always easy to follow.

I used Lion’s Brand Hometown USA in Aspen Tweed for this project. I absolutely love the ribbed effect. The yarn is super cozy too!

I worked the FHDC last night and joined the ends into a loop to begin working in the round; however, since I’m new to crochet, I’m stumped by your instructions to “Ch1 and TURN” before beginning to HDC in the back loops. Other infinity scarves I’ve worked didn’t have the instruction to TURN. That’s what’s throwing me off. Any further assistance you could give would be appreciated. Thanks!!

It’s how we get the ribbing effect. 🙂 Just follow the pattern as written and it will work out.
