How to Crochet a Magic Circle

July 4, 2015

By far, the most common question I get when I publish a new pattern that’s worked in the round is,

“What is a magic circle?”

I’ve been wanting to make this tutorial for a long time, and I’ve finally got it ready for you! A magic circle really is a simple concept. Instead of beginning your patterns-in-the-round with a CH4 (or how ever many the pattern says to chain), you start them with this handy technique that allows you to completely close up that center hole. And it’s not difficult to learn. Take a look!

Thank you so much enjoyed this so easy to follow your instructions. I would like to know if this pattern is in a new born to toddler size.
    Thanks Chris

Could you do this Malia Slouch or Beanie in a #5 Bulky yarn such as Charisma or will this totally throw off pattern for sizing & everything?

Also what would you recommend as the very softest yarn you’ve used without wool?

The hat would definitely turn out huge with a bulky weight yarn. As far as soft non-wools… I’d probably go with I Love This Yarn (Hobby Lobby) or some type of alpaca.

    Hello!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I’ve always wanted to learn an easier way to start a crochet in the round. This makes me excited because I’ve never had anyone to actually SHOW me how it is supposed to be done. I’ve only ever seen the finished product. Now I have another something to add to my crochet stitching-starting repertoire. Thank you again for such a cool easy to follow crochet in the round tutorial!!! You are fabulous!

    Sincerely,
    Lady Basile
    XOXOXO
