Princess Purse

I call this purse the Princess Purse because the ruffled top and the bling on the flower just seem princessy to me. (Yep, “princessy” is definitely a word.) Can’t you picture it in the colors of your daughter’s favorite Disney heroine? Think icy blue and white (Elsa), gold and pale yellow (Belle), or lavender and pink (Rapunzel). What an adorable addition to any little girl’s dress-up closet, and it’s SO simple to make!

PRINCESS PURSE

Hook:ย H (5.00mm) and I (5.5mm)
Yarn:ย Worsted weight in your favorite color ย (I used Hobby Lobbyโ€™s โ€œI Love This Yarnโ€)
Difficulty:ย Easy
Size:ย The body of the purse is about 5.5โ€ณ tall by 7.5โ€ณ wide
Notes:ย This bag is crocheted in the round. The floor of the bag is joined rounds, and the rest of the base is crocheted in a continuous spiral (noted in pattern).
Stitches Used:ย  Ch, SC, HDC, DC, TC (Triple or Treble Crochet), FPSC (Front Post Single Crochet)

With H hook, Ch 21.

Round 1: 2 SC in second Ch from hook. 1 SC in each of the next 18 Ch. 2 SC in next. You are now working on the back side of the chain. 2 SC in next. 1 SC in each of the next 18 Ch. 2 SC in last Ch. Join to top of first SC. (44 SC)

Round 2:ย Ch 1. 2 SC in same St. 1 SC in each of the next 20 St. 2 SC in next. 2 SC in next. 1 SC in each of the next 20 St. 2 SC in last St. Join to top of first SC. (48 SC)

Round 3:ย Ch 1. 1 HDC in each St around. DO NOT JOIN. From this point on, you will work in a continuous spiral (until noted otherwise); use a stitch marker, like a bobby pin, if needed. (48 HDC)

Rounds 4-12:ย 1 HDC in each stitch around (48 HDC)

Round 13: 1 SC in each stitch around (48 SC)

Rounds 14-15:ย Repeat Round 13. (48 SC)

Round 16 (ruffle edging, first layer):ย Ch 2. 2 FPDC in same St. (3 FPDC in next St) around. Join to top of first FPDC. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Round 17 (ruffle edging, second layer): With I hook, attach a contrasting color via one of the top sets of SC loops from Round 15 (see photo below; this row of loops is hidden behind the first ruffle layer). Ch 4; 2 TC in same St. (3 TC in next St) around. Join to top of first TC. Fasten off and weave in ends.

How do I line the purse?

I’m sorry, I don’t include instructions for lining the purse. (Mainly because I myself don’t sew.) ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi Rebecca!!
Could you tell me approximately how much yarn you used for the main color? I am wanting to use up some of my stash and just want to make sure I have enough.
    Thank you!!

Hi Rebecca, I am now where I start the ruffle, but I’ve noticed that the hidden stitches is not behind the first ruffle but in fact in the front, I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong, do I turn the purse inside out to create the first ruffle?

Did you maybe turn your work when you shouldn’t have?

I figured out how to make this purse and it turned out so
cute. I made this for my granddaughter in light green and white.
Thank you so much for such a wonderful pattern.

I am having trouble with this pattern. I chain 21, then I start row 1 at the part where I start working the back side of row one is where I get lost. Do I stay on the right side without turning? How do I end up with 44 stitches? Do I add 21 more chains at the end of the first 21, before starting the second part of row one and work from their or what?

You’re working in rounds. So you SC along the CH, and then SC back along the same CH in the opposite direction.

Thank you very much for your help. I had finally figured out what I was doing.
The yarn I used was baby yarn and it didn’t turn out right. So I made it in Red Heart yarn. Looks great..

Hi! This pattern is adorable. I am almost finished but can’t figure out how to attach the handle. I don’t want to glue it but sew it in. Would you please be able to help me with this. I’m a visual learner so a picture would be super! Thank you.

Hi! This pattern is adorable and I am almost finished with mine but I can’t figure out how to add the handle. I want to sew it in, not glue. Can you please explain how I would do this? Thank you.

I would just take a matching thread and sew it, trying to avoid going all the way through to the front of the purse. (This was one of my earliest patterns, and if I were redoing it now, I’d find a way to attach the handle via crochet.) ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi Rebecca,
Wanting to clarify round 1. Am I working both sides of the chain to get the 44 SC?

Yes! I’ll clarify that above as well. Thanks!

Cecelia (it won’t let me reply to yours because comments can’t go more than 5 deep):

I am actually going to be releasing a cocoon pattern within the next month or so! It’s not ready yet though ๐Ÿ™‚

For this pattern: after you put the last 2 SCs in, you join to the top of the first SC with a slip stitch. Then you Ch1 and begin the next row, going in the same direction.

I’m a little confused. Do we start with the magic circle? Or do we chain 21?

Ah, no wonder you’re confused. There is no Magic Circle. That was a typo when I listed it in the stitches used section. I fixed it. Thanks for catching that! I hope that clears things up a bit ๐Ÿ™‚

        Hi!
Ok I chain 21 then I do the steps but when I get to the end I put 2sc in the last stitch, do you turn your work and do the first step again?

        Reply
        • Rebecca says: April 2, 2014 at 8:18 am

You won’t turn your work at all. You’ll just Ch1 to get up to the next row, and then go around again, using the new stitch totals to make a slightly bigger round (it’s just a typical increase row).

            Hi Recbecca,
I was wondering if you have any free patterns on baby cocoons?

          • Cecilia Robbins says: April 2, 2014 at 7:40 pm

Ok I am so sorry, this is going to be my first time not turning and I thought that I knew how. I get how to get to the end when you put 2sc after that I don’t get how to do the next row without turning. Please help me again.

          • Cecilia Robbins says: April 3, 2014 at 12:30 pm

Ok I guess I don’t get it when you are going to start again, I’ve never done it this way. So after you put 2sc in the last one, what do you do with not turning it? Sorry

    how large is the purse?

    Reply
    • Rebecca says: March 28, 2014 at 8:51 am

The body of the purse is about 5.5″ tall by 7.5″ wide. That’s not including whatever length of strap you put on it. ๐Ÿ™‚

I would like to make this for my granddaughter, but I don’t understand, do I turn the rounds?

    Reply
    • Rebecca says: March 4, 2014 at 9:21 am

Hi Cheri! You won’t turn any of the rounds. The base of the purse (which is only the first 2 rounds, so pretty small) is joined rounds, but no turns. The rest of the purse is worked in a continuous spiral, so you won’t join OR turn. Hope that helps!
