I love slouchy hats! In fact in my pre-crochet days, when I was designing my friend’s crochet web site a few years back, she paid me partly in crochet goods… and my first request was, “Can you make me a slouchy hat?” I think they are so fun and they tend to look great even on girls who are convinced that they don’t look good in hats. (Yeah, I’m one of those.)
I originally created this slouchy hat for my little sis. I also took a dozen of them to a college artisan fair in November. They sold out! Now, you can have one of your own. (Pattern below pictures!)

JENNY SLOUCH HAT
Size:
Teen – Adult Small
Hat measures 9โ across at band, and is 10โ tall.
Materials:
- Hook sizes K (6.5mm), H(5.0mm), G(4.25mm)
- Yarn needle
- Worsted weight yarn (approx. 3oz; I often use I Love This Yarn or Vannaโs Choice, but my current favorite — and the yarn used in the photos you see on this post — isย Bernat Satin).
- Stitch marker (a bobby pin works great)
Gauge:
5 HDC x 3 rows = 1.5โ square
Stitches Used:
MC (magic circle)
CH (chain)
SS (slip stitch)
SC (single crochet)
HDC (half double crochet)
DC (double crochet)
CRDC (crossed double crochet, see Special Stitch)
Special Stitch:
CRDC โ skip one stitch, DC into next stitch, DC in skipped stitch to form an โXโ from the two DC. Be sure to skip an empty stitch with each new CRDC so that the Xs do not share stitches with each other.
Notes:
(1) This hat is worked in a continuous spiral. Do not join at the end of each round and do not chain at the beginning of rounds unless instructed. Use a stitch marker to mark the last stitch of each round.
(2) If you know that you tend to crochet tightly, be sure to go up a hook size or two. I basically get two kinds of comments on this pattern: “It fits perfect and I love it!” or “This would barely fit my two year old.” The CRDCs have a lot of leeway as far as how tightly they are crocheted, so keep a loose tension as best you can. Also keep in mind that because this is a slouch hat, youย want the band to be snug so that it stays on your head. If you think that a 9″ band is just too tight, then don’t go down to the G hook on the band.
(3) This hat relies on good drape to get the right look, so be mindful of that when you choose your yarn. Red Heart Super Saver, for instance, wouldย not be a good choice.
(4) Also regarding the sizing/drape: this hat is modeledย on girls with heads that fall into the “teen/adult small” sizing category. If you have a larger head or lots of hair, it won’t drape as much.ย I have a medium-sized head and think it’s the perfect amount of drape for me.ย If you want lots of drape, add more rounds to 9-16 before you start decreasing at round 17.

Using K Hook, begin with magic circle.
Round 1: ย 10 HDC in magic circle (10)
Round 2: 2 HDC in each ST around (20)
Round 3: 2 HDC in each ST around (40)
Round 4: (2 HDC in next, 1 HDC in next) around (60)
Round 5: (2 HDC in next, 1 HDC in next, 1 HDC in next) around (80)
Switch to H hook.
Round 6: CRDC around (you will complete 40 CRDC for a total of 80 ST)
Round 7:ย Skip 1st stitch (this will stagger your CRDCs, which gives your hat a diagonal look). CRDC around.* (You will complete 40 CRDC for a total of 80 ST)ย *Because of skipped stitch, your last CRDC will go one stitch into the next row.
Round 8: CRDC around. (You will complete 40 CRDC for a total of 80 ST)
Rounds 9-16: Repeat Round 8
Switch to G Hook.
Round 17: CRDC around, skipping one stitch after every 2 CRDCs until you reach end of round (you will complete 32 CRDC for a total of 64 ST)
Round 18: SC around (64)
Rounds 19-26: Repeat Round 18
When you complete Round 26, make 5 slip stitches (SS); fasten off and weave in ends.
It’s so cute! I can’t wait to start this hat! Have a Merry Christmas. Thanks for making this pattern available to us

I did it! IdiditIdiditIdidit! I followed a whole pattern! I think. And even if I lost or found a stitch or two, I ended up with a hat that I love and I can’t wait to give it to my mom for Christmas. I just taught myself to crochet last week and I’m so proud of it. Thank you! I was going to add a picture of it, but there isn’t an option for it on here. Oh well, imagine it in a lovely warm gray!
I love this pattern thank you!!!
I made this with Caron Simply Soft and it turned out to be a bit small. I only realized that it was because of the yarn when I made another one with Red Heart with Love. I love both hats regardless of their differences. ๐
This was my go to chemo hat for the winter last year. I got so many compliments on it. Looks good on just about everyone. Since I made a few for my nurses and other patients, I know. Great, easy pattern.
Hi there! Your pattern is lovely, and I found the instructions very clear and easy to follow. I was able to avoid the tension issue and the hat was looking great right up until the drop to size G hook. My rows with the G hook looked almost identical to the previous rows, barely smaller, but not nearly as different as the ones in your photos. I tried using more tension, but there wasn’t any difference. Any ideas on what I might have done wrong, or what I could do to fix that? Thanks. ๐
To fix it, you could just go down another hook size.
Okay, thanks! ๐
Great pattern! I made it last night and has a great fit. Thanks!
Hi. The recommended yarn is not available here. What I have is caron simply soft. Do you reccomend using the same hooks. The K seems to be a bit big for the yarn though Im not sure if it’s supposed to be like that. Any advise? Thanks so much.
Yes, still use a K hook. Be sure to keep your tension really loose, because Caron Simply Soft is a thin #4 yarn.
I just had a question about row 8 ( the repeat round) From the sound of it you would just do the regular CRDC. But by doing that my CRDC’s are on top of each other and not staggered like yours. Am I supposed to alternate between 7&8? Also just to clarify with the last CRDC on the 7th row do you complete the cross with the previous row stitch that was skipped?
Thank you!!
You avoid the CRDCs being on top of each other when you skip the first stitch of round 7. Your last CRDC of that round goes one stitch into the next round, essentially “shifting” your starting point by one stitch. Then you’ll just continue to repeat round 8 as per the instructions, and they will remain staggered. In other words, skip a stitch at the beginning of Round 7, then CRDC around and around and around until you get to the band.
I’ve recently started crochet and the Jenny Hat is the 5th pattern (and most successful) that I’ve made. I crochet the CRDC quite loose and tightened up for the SC edging and it turned out perfect!! Fits my head perfectly ๐
Thanks for a great pattern ๐
Hello! I absolutely love this pattern! Can I use the Lions Brand Heartland yarn instead of ILTY or Vannas choice?
You can use whatever yarn you wish to; just check your gauge. Heartland is considerably thinner than the other two.
Hello Rebecca
Could you tell me how long the hat is from round 1 to 18 and then how long it is from round 18 – 26. I have got to round 17 and don’t have much of a drape so I need to add some more rounds in but wasn’t sure how many more. I’m using a chunky wool and being new I know I crochet tight but I seem to match on the band and its 9″ across. Just worried about the drape. After trying the Rustic slouch hat and having to unstitch it all from being far to small. I don’t want to make the same mistake. However this on you can add rounds the other one you couldn’t. Thanks for your help. Kelly
I love this patterned , it’s nice and easy but why do I keep coming up with extra stiches? 60 becomes 63, I count them over and over?
Without seeing your work, it’s hard to know. But, you should be ending with 64 (not 60). As long as the finished hat is working out for you I wouldn’t worry too much about it.
I love your slouch hat. I knit and crochet hats for charity. And always looking for New patterns.
This hat is much more beautiful than it appears in your photos. It was easy to make, as well. It fit very well until I started on the band. When I’d finished it, I couldn’t get it on my head! I followed your instructions to crochet this area a little more tightly. Oops… I think I got a little carried away. Next time, I’ll just continue with the H hook, rather than switch to the G hook. Thanks for sharing your lovely patterns.
