I love making simple beanies. Besides the fact that they are SO fast, they are great for charity projects. There are tons of great ways to give back using newborn beanie hats. Hospitals use them in their OB wards (I still have the homemade beanies my sons wore home from the hospital!). Or how about donating them to orphanages? Last summer I had the opportunity to hand-deliver over 300 newborn beanies to orphanages in Bogota, Colombia (more on my connections with that wonderful country later).
Today’s free pattern isn’t so much a pattern as it is just a little inspiration; a fun, simple way to finish your typical newborn hat to make it stand out a bit more. The hat itself is just your standard, double crochet beanie hat. I added a contrasting row of SC to the bottom and a cute little button on the side, and that’s all there is to it!
Many of my readers make charity hats. Let me know in the comments where you donate your hats!
SUPER SIMPLE NEWBORN BEANIE
Hook:Â H (5.00mm)
Yarn: Small amount of worsted in two contrasting colors  (I typically use Hobby Lobby’s “I Love This Yarn” or Lion Brand’s “Vanna’s Choice”)

- Ch 2 does not count as starting DC. (Note: Originally, I had incorrectly stated that it does. Sorry for the confusion!) When joining, join to the first DC, not to the top of the chain.

Thank your for this cute and simple pattern! I’m making red caps for babies for the American Heart Association’s February 2018 awareness month. One helpful hint would be the measurements at completion on the pattern as a guide. I did find the answer after scrolling through the comments though.
I want ro purchase the newborn hat pattern in pdf. I’m doing the hats for donations to the hospital. I can’t find it online. I have Parkinson’s and its good therapy for me and benefits the babies too…..thank you
I don’t currently have a PDF for this pattern.
Thank you for sharing your pattern. I DO NOT SELL the hats I make I donate them to the labour and delivery at my local hospital or make them for friends whom are pregnant. At the moment I’m making a few for my daughters teacher who is having a baby girl. So thanks again!! Happy Hooking ?
this is where I plan to donate this hat.

thanks for the pattern!
I just made this hat and I really like the pattern only I made it with 5 bulky yarn with a 7mm hook. but I think the hat is too big for a newborn I’m going to try it with the worsted weight yarn and a 5mm hook. what should the measurements be when the hat is completed. Thanks!
Hi Kelly, the hat should be about 6.5-7″ across (laid flat), and about 4.5″ tall. These are standard measurements for a newborn hat. If you use bulky yarn on a pattern that calls for worsted, it will definitely come out larger. 🙂
Thank you so much for getting back to me I am using a worsted weight now and I am getting close to those measurements. The work up so nice. My daughter told me to go to Walmart and find a baby and try it on one I said that might be a little creepy LOL thanks again I am making these for the Pregnancy Care Center in our town.
i would love a hard copy of the this pattern mailed to me if possible, Pamela Record 10363 Quality Dr., #205, Spring Hill, fl 34609 Thank you. Congrats on your 3rd little Monkey !!!!!
Hi Pamela! I’m sorry, I don’t mail out my patterns. 🙂
I have a question so for the forth step so I keep on going until I get to 38 or not
If you do what the instructions in Round 4 say, you should end up with 38. I’m not sure I understand your question 🙂
Never mind I get it now
Thank you for sharing the pattern.
Thanks
Can I use I love this cotton instead?
Love this pattern, works up so quickly
i will definitely be making this to donate to hospital
Hi, want to ask about the hook size with which yarn? I use 3.0mm hook to crochet the milk cotton.. so, i need to inclease the dc to make bigger?
I have no luck following simple patterns! Makes me crazy! I tried your simple newborn beanie pattern and my beanie is looking like a doily now. No way tt will fit a newborn. In row 3 and 4 where you have 36, and 38 in brackets does that mean 36, and ,38 double crochets? Or do the doubles count as 2 crochets? My beanie is huge! I don’t understand exactly where I messed up! All othe comments are complaining that theirs are too small while mine is too big. I am using an H size hook. Thank you
The number in brackets is the number of total stitches in that round. It doesn’t matter the type of stitch, single double or triple, they count as one.
I can’t figure out what I am doing wrong then. Mine looks more like a Tam, than a beanie. Do you have video tutorial on this pattern?
Cindy
Hi Cindy, I don’t have a video tutorial, however you might want to look on YouTube for basic DC hat pattern tutorials because this one is very basic and will probably be very similar. There might be something you missed during the learning phase that is making the difference.
