Sweet Ocean Breeze Baby Blanket

Bummer of an update:
Bernat has discontinued both Sandstone and Lagoon. However, they still have a gorgeous line of colors in the Bernat Satin collection that you can choose from!

11/13/15: Occasionally, the time comes to update a pattern.

It’s not lost on me that although many of you have successfully completed this blanket without issue, there is also a significant number of you who are convinced that the pattern doesn’t work. Clearly something is getting lost in translation, and although I’m not exactly sure what it is, I am not above trying to make my patterns better and better. I am, after all, only human… and there will always be room for growth.

It has dawned on me recently that I’ve released some other patterns using this same stitch, just worded a bit differently, and there hasn’t been any confusion on those patterns. So, I’m re-writing this pattern in the exact same language that was used for those patterns. (If you’re wondering: the only significant changes, other than re-wording, are a CH1 at the beginning of rows (instead of the original CH2), and I also left out the part about putting the last stitches in the CH2 space. It was more confusing than I meant for it to be, and it’s not necessary to make the pattern work.)

If you were in the middle of making this blanket, and didn’t have a problem with the previous version, click here to view it in its original wording.

I’ve also gone ahead and deleted many of the comments for the pattern because they were getting pretty confusing, some of them were wrong, and frankly, they just won’t apply to this new version and I don’t want to confuse new visitors even more. Nothing wrong with starting fresh. 🙂

SWEET OCEAN BREEZE BABY BLANKET

Hook: I (5.50mm)
Yarn: Bernat Satin in Sandstone (250 yards, or 2 skeins), Lagoon (140 yards, or 1 skein), and Snow (280 yards, or 2 skeins).
Difficulty: Easy
Finished Size: Approx. 34″x26″ (You can easily increase or decrease the size by adding to your starting Ch; just make sure you start with an odd number of Ch)

Notes:
(1) This pattern is written in American Standard terms.
(2) When working in rows, I usually do my starting chain and first row in a hook one size bigger than the pattern asks for. I tend to chain tightly, which pulls at the finished project if I don’t use a larger hook to start. You can do the same if you wish. It is not noted in the pattern.
(3) “SC+DC” just means to put both a single crochet stitch and a double crochet stitch in the same place.

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

To begin: CH103.

Row 1:  SC+DC in 3rd CH from hook. (Sk next ST, SC+DC in next ST) across. (102)

Row 2: CH1, turn. Skip 1st ST, SC+DC in next ST. (Sk next ST, SC+DC in next ST) across. (102)

Rows 3-76: Repeat Row 2.

– – – – – –

Here’s how I ordered my colors for the blanket in the example, using Bernat Satin yarn:

  • Sandstone x4 rows
  • Snow x4
  • Lagoon x4
  • Snow x4
  • Sandstone x8
  • Snow x4
  • Lagoon x4
  • Snow x4

Repeat all of the above, in order, one more time.

Finish with a final section of Sandstone x4.

I wish to turn this into a full-sized blanket as it is such a lovely pattern. How many chain stitches do I use? Would doubling the amount of each section make it the same proportion? Glad you had such a lovely childhood along the ocean. Water does have such a mesmerizing effect.

Thanks for the pattern. I was looking for a simple pattern that I could make up quick for my grandson. I made it all in red as that is what he requested. Thanks again.

I learned this stitch from a sweater pattern from Guidepost Sweater project which is now unavailable online. I found that the blanket (or sweater, etc.) with the sc/dc combo will get mishapen without a good turning stitch. I learned to do it like this: one sc in in last stitch of the row, do a chain, turn and do a dc in the top of the sc. cand a chain in the last stitch of a rows, turn. Then resume the pattern. I have seen other turning methods but this one worked for me the best.

Did you do a border? If so, what was the pattern, if not what do you recommend. I love your site and your patterns. So very readable !!!

Hi Renee! I did not, and I’m not sure what I would recommend. I actually prefer not to put borders on striped blankets, as I think leaving them without looks more modern (which it what I’m usually going for). I know I’ve seen some people add a frilly border to it. 🙂

I want to make this blanket using 2 strands of bernat satin but I cannot decide what size hook to use.
Can someone please let me know what size hook for 2 strands of the Bernat Satin?
    Thanks!

at the end of the first row, I ended up with an extra loop! if I count the stitches made I have 102, it’s a mystery. I will try again I do love this pattern.

As stated in the blog post above, Bernat discontinued Lagoon and Sandstone. Snow can still be found pretty easily. I just checked Joann Fabrics’ website and they had it.

Wow I just found this and absolutely LOVE it! I’ll be adding this to my “ones to work”!

I’ll bet Red Heart Soft and or Red Heart Soft Essentials gave similar colors ;-))

Beautiful blanket and pattern! I’m thinking about giving it a go. Any thoughts on how long it might take an average crocheter? I want to give it as a gift for someone, but the shower is fast approaching and don’t want to start if I don’t think I can finish.

I get this question often and it’s a hard one to answer, because (1) everyone crochets at different speeds and (2) I crochet in such fragmented timeframes that I honestly have no clue how long it would take me to crochet a blanket in one sitting. 🙂 The good thing is that this stitch goes fairly quickly.

I like to know how long it takes too. Once I have the blanket started, a few rows in, I time myself (with my phone’s stop watch feature) to see how long it takes to crochet a row. Multiply that by how many rows. then add about another 45 minutes to an hour for weaving in the ends, changing colors and for the beginning chain and first row which takes a little longer than the rest. Note all of that on the pattern so you’ll know for the next time you make it. That should give you a good estimate. Of course you have to make 3-4 rows to get that number. 🙂

Hi! I love this pattern and I’m working on an afghan to my new home! 🙂
Just a quick question: how do you suggest to make the color changing? Should I just cut the thread and do an invisible join? Because carrying the color for that many rowls do not seem that practical.
I would say I’m an begginer/intermediate crocheteer, but I’m pretty lazy with tails left at the end of the project.
Thank you!! Oh, and congrats on your new baby! 🙂

I hate the tails too. So I just do them as i go…when I have 4-6 hanging. That way it’s not such a hateful task.

I just cut them and weave them in as I go, same as B. Wood. It’s a necessary evil. 🙂

Do you do sc +D.C. In one stich, skip one st. And then again , sc+D.C. And skip next stich all the first row? Do same for all row?

First off I love this pattern. I’ve made one blanket successfully. On my second I am having trouble with my sides turning out crooked, it shows a definite lean.I took it all apart and started all over.It is still doing the lean.I am following the pattern exactly. Help!

It’s really hard to say, considering you did your first one successfully. You’ll need to figure out what you’re doing differently this time. The pattern itself hasn’t changed, unless you did your first one before November 2015 when I updated it. 🙂

    Congratulations on your baby boy!!

I love this pattern!!! I’ve been sitting on a couple boxes in multiple colors of Bernat Baby Blanket yarn for years. A good friend also recently had a baby boy so I’ve been searching for a different baby blanket pattern. I personally do not enjoy putting together squares 😉 so this looked perfect.
I’ve actually started 2 blankets. The first using baby sand, baby blue and vanilla following your color order. I put the sc+dc in the sc stitches of the previous row (which is looking beautiful) until I ran out of baby sand. While waiting for more to arrive, I started another blanket using Bernat’s little cosmos.
Curiosity got the better of me and I peeked at you first written version of this pattern, lol. I did interpret it differently. For the second blanket I’m putting my sc+dc not in a stitch but in the space between the sc+dc stitches on the previous row. It is also turning out unique and beautiful! The look is slightly different (but I did go up a hook size). I really like both!! Thank you for putting your pattern out there for me to find!!!
p.s. I like both blankets, which of the 2 do you use? 😉

Yes, the Sandstone and Lagoon were discontinued years ago as I mentioned in the blog post. The commenter above you recommended Aqua and Linen and said it looked very similar. Good luck!

What caught my eye on this afghan was the colors ( Sweet Ocean Breeze baby afghan) I loved the colors I did not notice that 2 of the colors were no longer available but I bought Bernat Aqua for the Lagoon and Linen for the Sandstone loved them I would not even notice a difference I usually don’t buy the yarn that is posted with the pattern’s I usually buy yarn for less cost I did love working with the Satin Bernat yarn but am afraid it will fray and get’s pulls in it to easy and the snow had some colored die in it but the end story is I just love this afghan thank you for sharing
