Special thanks to Lion Brand Yarn for providing the yarn for this sample!
I have another new slouch pattern for you! This one is simple, but it has a eye-catching spiral design that adds a lot of visual interest.
The Yarn
I’ve been a fan of Lion Brand’s Heartland Yarn for a while. It’s a lighter worsted weight acrylic yarn that comes in a range of beautiful, natural colors, all of which have just the right amount of sheen. My stores don’t carry the full range of colors, so I was very excited when Lion Brand sent me some shades that I’d never seen before. For this hat, I used a color called “Katmai.” Click here to view all the colors available. It was the combination of the color of the yarn and the design of the hat that made me think of snow capped mountains, so that’s how I got the name for the pattern!

THE SNOWCAPPED SLOUCH HAT

Size:
One Size Fist Most (Preteen – Adult Woman).
Hat measures about 9.5” across at band, and 9.5” tall.
Materials:
- Hook sizes K (6.5mm), H(5.0mm)
- Yarn needle
- 150-160 yards of worsted weight yarn (I used Lion Brand Heartland in “Katmai”)
- Stitch marker (a bobby pin works great)
Gauge:
With H hook, 6 HDC x 4 rows = 1.5” square
Abbreviations Used:
ST (stitch)
MC (magic circle – view tutorial here)
SK (skip)
CH (chain)
SS (slip stitch)
SC (single crochet)
HDC (half double crochet)
SC2TOG (single crochet 2 together)
Notes:
(1) This pattern is written in American Standard Terms.
(2) This hat is worked in a continuous spiral. Do not join at the end of each round and do not chain at the beginning of rounds unless instructed. Use a stitch marker to mark the last stitch of each round.
(3) The CH2s that create the holes in the hat still count as stitches. Keep this in mind when checking your stitch count, and when you reach Round 24 where it tells you to SC in the next 6 stitches (the CH2 counts as the first 2 of the 6).

Using K Hook, begin with magic circle.
Round 1: 10 HDC in magic circle (10)
Round 2: 2 HDC in each ST around (20)
Round 3: 2 HDC in each ST around (40)
Round 4: (2 HDC in next ST, 1 HDC in next ST) around (60)
Round 5: (2 HDC in next ST, 1 HDC in each of the next 2 STS) around (80)
Switch to H hook.
Round 6: (CH2, SK 2 STS, HDC in each of the next 8 STS) around. (80)
Rounds 7-23: Repeat Round 6.
Round 24: (SC in each of the next 6 STS; SC2TOG) around. (72)
Rounds 25-33: SC around.
Slip Stitch into the next 3 STS to smooth down the round, then fasten off and weave in ends.
I have made this hat as gifts over and over! It’s one of my favorite patterns.
I will make this for my granddaughter. She has a number of hats, but they’re very juvenile and she gets angry when my grandson laughs at her. This hat would be perfect.
I really like this pattern. It looks complex, yet when reading through the instructions, it appears to be quite easy. Can’t wait to try out this pattern and oh so many more of your patterns.
Made this for my little girl with a size smaller hook, she loved it so much she had me make one for her teacher for Christmas. 😀
Love this hat, looks so comfy!
I love all the variations of this hat!
Love your patterns! The Snow Capped Slouch Hat looks like it will be my next project. I went and got Lion Brand Heartland yarn because I love the look of the hat you made.
Hi There Rebecca:
I love your patterns, have done several already and was one of the thousands that did the Wildflower Bag crochet-a-long.
I have tried to comment on your blog, but the computer keeps spitting it out, so I figured I would email you this way instead of on your blog.
Question: On round 24 of the above pattern, can you tell me what to do with the ch2 spaces? When you finish up round 23, the ch2 space is the beginning of round 24, if you skip over them I end up with 56 stitches, if you do 2 sc in chain 2 space and then 4 sc to make 6sc and then ch2tog, you end up with less than 72 stitches…please help!
Thank you.
Carol M.
You won’t skip over them. I tried my best to explain it in the Notes section (see #3).
If you count the ch2 space as 2 and continue in that fashion that you stated, you will be sc2tog a total of 10 times which will give you 70 final stitches, also, you run into a problem twice when the sc you are to crochet together are the ch2 spaces. I sc 2 in the space, counted 6 and then sc2tog which happened to be the last 2 sc before the ch2 space, 8 sections minus 8 stitches (sc2tog) =72 stitches. The hat came out beautiful, thanks!
Thank you so much for sharing your talents. I look forward to making these for my grandkids and of course one for myself.
When starting 1st 4 rows aren’t flat…is this normal or did I do something wrong? Wanting to a catch a mistake before I get too far Thanks
You’re fine! It’s supposed to have a wavy base. Sorry it isn’t visible in the photo. 🙂 It gives it a sort of cinched look.
I love your hats. Thanks for the pattern.
I just made the slouchy and love the design and how quickly it works up. My only issue was that I had to do a couple of extra decrease rows as the hat seemed loose around my head. I do tend to crochet quite loosely and was wondering if I went down to a 4.5mm if that might help without doing the extra decreases? Any suggestions would be great, although the hat still came out great! I used the Heartland 4-ply and it such a soft yarn and love the look it gives the slouchy!
Hi Fayleen! That might work… the only way to know is to try it or to do a gauge check. 🙂
Thanks for your great free patterns. My skills have greatly improved with many of your patterns and tutorials.
My daughter moves slouch caps… and she will love this one! Great design! The hard part is — do I make the Snowcapped one or the Snowdrift one first? 🙂
I am thinking of doing this in Xmas red and putting Xmas green holly leaves with red berries on them. Love this pattern. x
