Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few months, you are probably aware of at least one of the fun new self-striping yarns with delicious-sounding names that have taken the crochet world by storm. This is a review of one of those yarns: Sweet Roll by Premier Yarns!

You know how they (whoever “they” are) say you shouldn’t go grocery shopping on an empty stomach? Well, the same applies to yarn shopping for Sweet Roll. Seriously, the names of these colors – Cheesecake Pop? Peanut Butter Swirl? Birthday Cake Pop? Just hand me a fork and back away slowly. And while this yarn isn’t actually made out of flour and sugar, it is 100% acrylic, which will be good news to the many of you who are allergic to wool.
So, without further ado, here are my thoughts on Sweet Roll!
BASIC INFO
Sweet Roll is a 100% acrylic, #4 medium worsted weight self-striping yarn. There are a generous 245 yards per roll, and 25 different color combinations to choose from. (Click here to check out all the colors!) And, it’s machine washable and dryable.
COLOR
I had the chance to work with a bright and cheerful colorway called “Peaches & Cream Pop”. It’s a little outside my norm, as I usually gravitate toward neutral palettes. It’s always good to branch out once in a while, though! I was impressed with the richness of the colors. Each Sweet Roll includes three different colors, and this one was a combo of a coral, a pink, and a yellowy-cream.
Every Sweet Roll goes through each of its three colors two times, with equal amounts of each color (about 40 meters per section). Thanks to those evenly-spaced repeats, you can do multi-skein projects without having to worry about wasting any yarn, because the next skein will always match up perfectly to where the previous one left off. This is my favorite feature of Sweet Roll (and I can name quite a few other self-striping yarns that I wish would catch on to this simple but oh-so-helpful concept)! Be aware that the color changes are abrupt (they do not gradually change from one to the next).
FEEL
I was pleasantly surprised at the softness of the yarn. It definitely has an acrylic feel, but compared to other acrylics in the same price range, it is certainly on the softer side. I tested the yarn with my Jenny Slouch Hat pattern, and the hat had a very nice drape. (I only used one ball and still had plenty of yarn to make a cute pom pom for the top, but ever since I moved my office to the basement to make room for a nursery, my pom pom maker has been M.I.A.)
FUNCTION
Sweet Roll comes in a really nice, flat-bottomed ball with a handy starting tail sticking out of the middle just waiting for you to grab. I loved this. I don’t know about you, but I sometimes I feel like I spend way too much time digging through, and occasionally destroying, a skein of yarn looking for that end! Sweet Roll could not have made it any easier.
And it’s well-wrapped, so after the first few yards, the yarn comes out of the ball with virtually no resistance. I went through an entire ball and never pulled out a tangle. And, with the flat bottom, the yarn doesn’t roll around everywhere; you can set it on the table in front of you and not even think about it. Win!
FINAL THOUGHTS
The creators of Sweet Roll really took into account many of the desires of crocheters (and knitters, I’m sure) everywhere. From the uniformity of each roll, allowing for creating multi-skein projects with no headaches, to the practical function of the center-pull, flat-bottomed ball, this yarn is a good, solid choice for striped acrylic projects. If I could add any feature to it, I would have made the color changes gradual, but that’s really a matter of personal preference. Overall, this yarn is a nice, affordable choice with plenty of color schemes to suit any style.

Do you have to do anything special so the new stripes of color begin at the start of a new row…like when making a scarf or afghan? Are there a certain number of stitches to cast on or certain number of chains to begin with?
There could be, but it would be challenging to figure out since the color changes are SO spaced out.
So do you just let the colors change where ever they happen to fall on the row and not worry about having the change’s always take place at the beginning of a row? I appreciate your help!
Most people let them fall wherever they happen to fall, but you do end up with obvious color changes.

I’m addicted to Sweet Rolls. I’m one of many allergic to wool. I had to sit back and not feel jealous of the Caron cakes users. So happy now that I have Sweet Rolls to enjoy with no calories!!
I have enjoyed working with the first skein that I purchased. I have 3 other skeins. After seeing this darling hat, I am going to start crocheting it right now with a skein of Sweet Roll. Hard decision is which color will I use.
I love it and see myself purchasing a lot more. I prefer it over the other brand a lot. And since you shouldn’t use wool in baby items, I will be using it for my baby items
Not impressed with the Sweet Roll yarn at all. It’s no softer than Red Heart Supersaver Saver. Only thing good is that if you are wool sensitive you can use it. If you had a choice, go for the Caron Cakes. You can get the Caron at Michaels and some Jo Ann carries the sweet rolls.
Hmm… I wonder if it has something to do with the colorway, because I definitely wouldn’t compare mine to Super Saver. Mine felt much closer to Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn. 🙂

I’ve used quite a bit of the sweetrolls in the last month or so. I’ve finished one small project with the Raspberry swirl, a simple dragonfly shawl, and my daughter loved it. I’m also working the end of my 10th large cake right now on a large circular afghan. For the most part, I’ve been quite happy with the yarn. The black pepper swirl (10 cakes) is rougher on the hands then the raspberry (2.5 cakes) but that seems to be the case with darker colors sometimes. There are the occasional knots, unfortunately they don’t always coincide with a color change that matches the pattern properly. Also, I had one cake where the yarn dropped to about half the thickness and changed colors to a yellowish beige, not the greys and black it was supposed to be, for a yard or so. The rest of the cake was ok, just that one part was messed up. Some of the cakes have no knots, some had 4 + just luck of the draw I guess. Over all I like it and most people are floored by the results.
I have used 3 skeins of Silver Swirl and found the first one to be great, for the most part, but the second one was hugely disappointing. Aside from the 3 knots I had to cut out there were also several places in which the yarn was not spun properly. It was like crocheting with 4 thin strands of yarn. I had to be very careful that it didn’t split while I crocheted. And the problem lasted almost completely throughout whatever shade I was into at the moment.
I ended up taking that skein back to Joann’s and they gave me another one so I was able to complete the scarf I was making.
I’ve never come across yarn that wasn’t spun properly before. It was very annoying and definitely affected the look of my project. That said, I have coupons and I’m going back for more tomorrow. Hopefully, the problems I had were a fluke. But I really don’t appreciate the number of knots I’ve come across. All 3 skeins I’ve used have had knots that needed to be cut out. Did you encounter any knots in your skein?
I’m sorry you didn’t have a good experience! I have actually been through both of my skeins and haven’t encountered any knots or areas that weren’t spun properly. You definitely got a bad roll! But, it does happen, and if the store hadn’t allowed you to replace it, Premier Yarns probably would have. Especially in a self-striping yarn, we rely on getting good skeins to complete our projects!
The “bad” skein didn’t stop me from buying more! I just finished a scarf and it turned out great. No badly spun sections and not a single knot in the whole skein!
I love these yarns and have made three hats so far. A shawl is next. I can use this yarn with all my favorite patterns I already have. I talked to the purchasing agent at my local Ben Franklin and asked if they will be keeping these in stock and they said for sure. I feel the need for more yarn about once a week. Oh yes I am a happy hooker!
I purchased 4 skeins of this yarn in peanut butter swirl and it was fabulous!! So much so that I ordered 4 more in the same color for a nice size C2C blanket. It’s soft and luxurious, so easy to work with and the colors are out of this world. I will definitely be buying more.
