You want to know what a fun, easy, quick project is in the dead heat of summer?

Baskets!

I’ve never published basket patterns before now, and I’ll tell you why. It’s because I did not like making them. I’d made one back in the day (which still graces my dining room), but I didn’t enjoy the process because my hands just ached all the way through. Using crazy thick yarn with an unnaturally tiny hook is a recipe for wrist issues, and so the idea of ever making a basket again was not really an option for me.

Until I decided there had to be a better way!

And once I figured out how to make beautiful baskets without killing my hands, I went a little crazy and ended up designing 4 patterns. I think you’ll love this method — not only does it save you the pain, but it produces professional-grade baskets that are significantly sturdier than any crocheted baskets I’ve seen, and it all comes down to the addition of one thing – plastic canvas! (Seems obvious now, right?)

As usual, my patterns are 100% free on the blog; but if you prefer the ad-free PDF versions, you can grab the Basket Bundle, which includes all four of these patterns, for just $5:

Love your videos! Can you tell me where you get the leather for the handles for your baskets? Making them for Christmas for my Bunco group.

I found a small sheet of leather at Hobby Lobby and cut it myself. You should be able to find it at any major craft store 🙂

    Hi Rebecca,

So glad I found your youtube channel and then through that your blog. I’m planning on making the herringbone baskets from your youtube tutorial (which is such a good tutorial by the way) and was wondering for the leather handles, do you have any tips on what kind of faux leather I can purchase, width wise? I was hoping I could pick something up at Michael’s.

Hi Rebecca. I LOVE your baskets and have made several of them. Now my mom has asked me if I could do a square one. She has never asked me for anything crochet, and therefore I would really like to make her one. Is it possible to make one of your baskets square? I would gladly pay for a pattern, especially if it was the mosaic or nesting basket pattern. I know I’m asking for a lot, but I’m hoping it can be done. Best regards Lena

Hey Rebecca I am having trouble at row 4, my final count is always 27, not 24 (with the floor pouf too). I even went back and watched the tutorial again to see if I missed something in row 4 but it doesn’t look like I am. I just kept going with the baskets as they’re small anyway so turned out great but I’m hesitant with the pouf as I really want to get it right. Do you have any idea what I might be doing wrong?

      Sure! ? Here’s what you’re probably doing.

Round 4 says “(SC in next ST, 2SC in next ST, SC in next ST) around”. Simplified, this repeat is 1-2-1… so there’s a single SC at the beginning of the repeat, and a single SC at the end of it. Meaning when you repeat it, those will be side by side. What YOU are probably doing is this:
      1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2…
But what you need to be doing is this:
      1-2-1-1-2-1-1-2-1-1-2-1…
Here the sequence is in parentheses to help you better see the repeats:
      (1-2-1)-(1-2-1)-(1-2-1)-(1-2-1)…

Hi Rebecca, I just watched and loved the mosaic basket video. I love this pattern and can not wait to make some baskets! Do you have any suggestions for making a cover for these?

Hmm! I guess the easy way would be to do another increase circle and make it one or two rounds larger than the basket itself, and then do a few rounds of 1SC in each ST. But it might be flimsy 🙂

Can another yarn be use in place of the home dec yarn. I can not find it.
    Thank you

Sure! Because the stiffness comes from plastic canvas and not the yarn, you can really use whatever yarn you want. Of course the look will change depending on how different your yarn looks from the Home Dec.

    Hi Rebecca.
I just watched your video for the mosaic basket. I have refrained from basket making in the past because I too thought of sore hands and fingers. I will be attempting one soon thanks to your video. I loved watching you crochet. You not only explained clearly how to make the basket but I learned some helpful tips. I am a self taught crocheter and you clarified some things for me that I had taught myself “incorrectly”. I will definitely be researching some of your other projects and videos/tutorials. I am fortunate to have discovered you. Thank you so much. Linda

I’m going to check out the mosaic basket you made tomorrow. Can’t wait!

I love all the baskets but especially the nautical one. I want to make it out of the outdoor yarn and keep it on my deck. Thanks so much for the patterns.

Once again, I know you have to be tired of hearing this, but I cannot even 1x get on the new site. I was a pass holder on your old site as well (like the ladies that cannot access the site now).
I’m sorry to be a thorn in your side, truly.

Rebecca, I’m having an awful time trying to get the basket patterns. I purchased the Passholder package during the Malia bag. Any ideas what I could be doing wrong, I’ve never had any problems before…….
